Certified Flight Instructor Instrument Training
Expand your instructor qualifications and prepare to teach instrument flying with confidence.
Program Overview
Help Pilots Fly With Confidence in the Clouds
Certified Flight Instructor–Instrument training prepares you to teach instrument flying and pursue an instrument instructor rating. Designed for flight instructors expanding their qualifications, this program develops your ability to teach instrument procedures, IFR planning, and sound decision-making.
At Sevin Aviation, CFII training combines personalized ground and flight instruction with practice teaching instrument concepts. Expect to develop lessons, explain procedures, and demonstrate instrument flying while learning to recognize and address student errors. Your training focuses on practical test preparation and effective instruction in the IFR environment.
- Expand your qualifications to teach instrument flying
- Develop effective instrument teaching techniques
- Strengthen IFR knowledge and instructional proficiency
- Prepare for the CFII practical test
Prerequisites
This add-on program is designed for certificated flight instructors who hold a commercial or airline transport pilot certificate with the appropriate airplane and instrument ratings. We’ll review your qualifications, instrument proficiency, and applicable medical requirements before flight training.
FAA Requirements
Complete the required instrument instructor ground and flight training, pass the Flight Instructor Instrument Airplane knowledge test, obtain the required endorsements, and pass the practical test. Existing flight instructors do not need to repeat the Fundamentals of Instructing knowledge test.
Training Format
Focused ground instruction, flight training, and independent study build your ability to teach instrument flying. Training includes presenting instrument lessons, demonstrating IFR procedures, evaluating student performance, and preparing for the CFII practical test.
Program Outcome
Prepare to add an instrument-airplane rating to your flight instructor certificate. After passing the FAA practical test, you’ll be qualified to provide instrument instruction within your certificate privileges and applicable FAA requirements.
Program Curriculum
What You'll Learn

Instrument Ground Instruction
Learn to explain instrument flight concepts clearly, including regulations, weather, aircraft systems, and IFR flight planning. Develop lessons that help students connect ground knowledge to decisions in the cockpit.

Teaching Instrument Flight Skills
Develop techniques for teaching instrument scanning, aircraft control, and workload management. Practice recognizing student errors and explaining corrections that build consistent instrument flying habits.

Navigation, Holding, and Approaches
Practice teaching instrument navigation, holding patterns, and approach procedures. Learn to break complex tasks into manageable steps while emphasizing preparation, accuracy, and situational awareness.

IFR Decision-Making and Risk Management
Learn to guide students through weather assessments, departure planning, alternate selection, and changing conditions. Emphasize sound judgment and personal minimums alongside procedural proficiency.

Student Evaluation and Feedback
Develop your ability to assess instrument proficiency, identify learning gaps, and provide useful feedback. Adapt lessons to each student’s needs while helping them manage workload and become more independent.

CFII Practical Test Preparation
Bring your instrument knowledge, teaching techniques, and flight demonstrations together for the practical test. Refine lesson presentations and practice explaining procedures while demonstrating them from the instructor’s seat.
